JAK tree shears make work more profitable and safer
The JAK Tree Shear brings unprecedented efficiency and ease to clearing trees and brush. Designed for heavy-duty use, the JAK Tree Shear offers a wide range of tree handling features. Whether you’re clearing roadsides, power lines, railway tracks, field edges, plots of land, or woodland and landscaped areas, the Tree Shear makes clearing work safe and efficient.
Our tree shear is a powerful, fast and highly durable tool, trusted by more and more professionals around the world. The tree shear allows wood to be cut effortlessly and accurately at the desired point, and then lifted to the desired location for further processing. Thanks to its design, the Tree Shear is also ideal for handling and cutting wood on the ground.
The best use for tree clearance with a tree shear is to clear trees from a site that are unsuitable for other uses, for example to sell to energy companies. Tree shears are also a great tool for removing problem trees in awkward places such as around buildings or parks. It is also used to clean up damage caused by storms or fires.
JAK Tree shear increases excavator utilisation
Finland has a huge number of excavators of different sizes, most of which remain idle during the winter. This is a waste of resources, because even if the ground is frozen, an excavator can do more than just dig. Indeed, excavators are also excellent clearing machines when equipped with a good quality tree shear. And there is plenty of energy wood in Finland.
By purchasing a high-quality and durable tree shear, you can therefore significantly increase the utilisation of your machine, especially in winter, and thus offer a wide range of additional services such as young forest restoration to new customer groups. You can then spread the cost of the tree shear evenly with the income from the energy wood, while keeping your machine running at a high level every day of the year.
The efficiency of tree shearing with a grapple depends first and foremost on the quantity and quality of the wood on site, the terrain, the dimension and size of the platform machine and the experience of the operator. At best, the productivity of the work can be very high, especially if a collector is used with the tree shear.
A tree shear is also a handy tool for maintaining your own local forest or for removing problem trees in your neighbourhood. So if you already work with machines, a tree shear is a good addition to the various possibilities of working with machines.
Excavators are excellent clearing machines when equipped with a high-quality tree shear.

More information on the different energy grab models
Although the principle of the tree shear is basically the same, there are many different types and models. JAK-Metalli The Oy range includes tree shears for excavators, telehandlers and loaders, as well as timber loaders for tractors and forest machines, all of which are also available in a variety of sizes depending on the weight of the machine type.
The principle of operation of the general tree shear is a two-jaw model, whose efficiency and precision are particularly important for year-round professional use. The two jaws provide a constant cutting power and a wide range of working angles. The double jaw model also offers top loading characteristics. Thanks to the model-protected design, cutting wood is really easy.
Another typical type of tree shear is the single jaw model, where the force is concentrated laterally on one side of the jaw to be clamped. The single jaw tree shear is lightweight, versatile and slightly cheaper, and can be used on a wide range of machines of different sizes. In terms of cutting power, the single jaw is almost on a par with the double jaw, making it a viable option for the more experienced user.
The tree shear cuts the wood at the same time, due to the combined effect of the compression of the cuts and the cutting blade. However, there are also different types of cutting operations, where the cutting of the wood can also take place after the actual crushing action. A tree shear can be installed in place of the cutting blade of the tree shear, where the jaws of the tree shear are always closed first and the wood is cut by the cutting blades only afterwards. The guillotine function can also be used to increase the cutting diameter of the wood and to improve the loading characteristics of the chuck.
JAK Tree shear applications
Most commonly, the tree shear is an attachment for the excavator, which is attached to the end of the excavator boom with a suitable clamp. It is also sometimes called an energy tree shear, a guillotine shear and, as the name suggests, is used mainly for felling and collecting energy wood from forests, field and roadside verges, and for removing problem trees near settlements, for example. Tree shears are also used to some extent in the management of trees and shrubs in parks and other green areas.

A tree shear is usually used to cut and collect wood that is slightly thinner than the trunk thickness and not suitable for pulpwood or other further use, and whose main use is to produce heat energy. The tree shear felled by the tree shear can be chipped into suitable firewood, which can be used as such or to produce biomass for pellet stoves or as raw material for biogas production, for example. The branches and twigs removed during the felling of energy wood can also be used for the same purpose.
Suitable applications for the tree shear include:
- Cleaning up roadsides and field margins
- Clearance of power lines
- Maintenance of the railway track edge
- Thinning of forest areas
- Cutting down problem trees
- Landscaping
- Land clearance
- Clearing storm damage
- Restoration of young forest – Landscape harvesting
Felling problem trees safely with a tree shear
The tree shear is a great tool for felling a variety of problem trees that many other methods can be difficult, dangerous or too expensive to fell. Mounted on the boom of an excavator or telehandler, the tree shear is also a good way to reach tree trunks from a distance, if you need to be careful of bushes or other plantings in the area. Furthermore, the cutting blade of the tree shear does not spread the same kind of debris into the environment as, for example, a chainsaw.
A typical problem tree is an old and decayed yard tree that there is not enough space in the environment to cut down. In this case, it is best to cut the tree down by chopping it off piece by piece, starting at the top. This way, the tree can be brought to the ground without endangering the environment or people. At the same time, large branches and twigs can be cut off and lifted to the ground in a controlled manner. With this method, even large trees can be quickly cut into small pieces without major disruption or danger.
The tree shear can also be used to load the cut logs at the same time, for example on board a truck, or to chop them into suitable lengths for firewood. So there is no point in using a chainsaw to cut down completely rotten or otherwise problematic trees. With the tree shear, you can harvest in a controlled and safe manner.
JAK Tree Shear for disaster prevention and management
In storm damage and wildfire clearance, the safety of residents and rescue workers is paramount. JAK Tree Shears are used to cut down fallen trees. The two-jaw high structure holds a full-length tree safely in a tight grip during rescue and demolition operations. This makes clearing storm-felled trees easy, fast and safe. The JAK Tree Shear is suitable for excavators, wheel loaders and telehandlers as well as timber loaders for various tractors.
Examples of applications:
- Protection zones for wildfires
- Clearing storm damage
- Demolition of wooden buildings
Wildfire protection zones are easily cleared with the JAK Tree Shear, which in turn prevents major fires. The JAK Tree Shear is an economical and safe way to cut down trees in a protection zone.
Introduction of the tree shear
When introducing the tree shear, it is important to read the instructions that came with it. Installation on the chassis machine is easy, as long as care is taken to ensure the correct connection of the attachment and hydraulics. So make sure that the grab and all necessary connections are correctly aligned, the hydraulics are tightly sealed and that the attachment between the tree shear and the boom is securely installed correctly.
Once the tree shear has been installed on the excavator boom, it is a good idea to test whether the functions of the tree shear work as intended before actual use. While the machine is running, the jaws of the tree shear can be opened and closed a few times in place to see if the hydraulics are working properly. Once the initial tests have been carried out, the system can then be checked for any leaks, for example.
Once the initial preparations and the necessary checks and procedures have been carried out, you can move on to the actual cutting of the tree with the grapple. You should get used to using the grapple by trying it on easy targets and thin trees. If the pressure stays steady, the cutting force is good and the grapple works as it should, the tree shear is ready for real use.
Once you get the hang of the operation and become familiar with the use of the grapple, you can start to increase the thickness of the wood to be cut. However, it is immediately important to remember that you should not attempt to cut wood thicker than the specified cutting diameter of the tree shear.
Use of the tree shear in different situations
The tree shear can cut down reasonably large trees, so always remember to use common sense, safety distances and work safety regulations. Using a tree shear is not difficult in itself, if you have mastered the use of a platform machine in different situations. It is always a good idea to take into account the characteristics of the chassis machine, especially when handling heavier trees.
An important aspect of the correct use of a tree shear is the way the shear is positioned in relation to the tree before the actual cutting. For maximum cutting efficiency, the tree should be guided horizontally directly between the inner base of the grapple and the cutting blade, where the cutting is most easily and quickly accomplished by pressing.
If there is limited space for felling, a large tree can also be conveniently cut in sections, starting from the top. In the hands of a skilled driver, a suitable size of tree is cut off one at a time and then brought to the ground in a controlled manner. In this way, large trees in particular can be felled safely without fear of falling on, for example, housing or machinery.
The tree trunk can also be easily pruned vertically by running the tree shear open against the trunk, allowing smaller branches to be easily broken off. For larger branches, it is best to cut them with the grab. Trees can also be cut into shorter pieces on the ground and loaded into neat stacks.
For example, if you are using a mass gatherer, it is important to make sure that you do not force too much wood into the tree shear so that the collector can work properly. The use of a tree shear with a collector is therefore best suited to clearing smaller, dense trees and other vegetation from the environment.
JAK Tree Shear – maintenance and warranty
It is a good idea to monitor the condition and functioning of the tree shear regularly. Although a good quality tree shear will last a very long time under heavy use, it should always be cleaned and inspected for any damage or leaks. As a primary maintenance measure, regular greasing will help keep your tree shear in good condition and operationally safe for a long time.
When not in use, it is best to store the tree shear in a dry and sheltered place, if possible, to prevent unnecessary moisture or direct sunlight, for example, from embrittling its parts or spoiling its appearance. JAK Tree Shears are also sought after second-hand and have a good resale value. It is therefore worth taking good care of your tree shear and storing it according to common sense guidelines.
When used correctly, all our tree shears last well and are therefore also popular with professionals. We are also proud to offer a full 24-month factory guarantee on our products. However, it is important to note that the tree shear warranty does not cover breakages or malfunctions due to abuse or neglect. We will do our best to help our customers in the event of a problem.
How does the JAK Tree Shear work?
The tree shear works by the interaction of jaws moving under hydraulic pressure and a rigid cutting blade, between which the tree trunk is squeezed. The principle of operation is clearly different from the harvester head of a typical forest machine, where the wood is transported by rollers through the chute and cut to size. They are therefore two different methods and two different applications.
In general, a tree shear consists of a few main components, including the tree shear body, jaws, cutting blade, hydraulics, clamps and accessories.
Tree shear frame
The frame of the tree shear serves as the basis of the product. The body of the tree shear must be of extremely high strength, as it absorbs a great deal of stress in the space between the boom and the wood to be cut. For this reason, the design of the body is based on more than a decade of development and testing, combining optimum shape, weight and, of course, durability.

Tree shear jaws
The tree shear’s jaws are perhaps the most visible of the moving parts of the tree shear. Their main function is to grip the wood and press the wood to be cut against the cutting blade. The jaws are, of course, particularly important for their unfailing grip, but also for their design, which allows the tree shear to work easily and smoothly. The jaws of the tree shear are also used for loading wood, which means that the tip of the jaws in particular must be sufficiently long and correctly shaped to ensure that the wood is loaded in a balanced and safe manner.
Tree shear cylinders
The cylinders of the tree shear and the associated hydraulics act as the power source for the tree shear, which above all allows the shear to move in a squeezing and opening motion. Other functions of the tree shear, such as rotation or the use of various accessories, can also be integrated into the hydraulic system by means of various valves.
At its most basic level, hydraulics is the transfer of power through the pressure and flow of a fluid. In a machine tool, a diesel engine drives a hydraulic pump, which in turn transfers power through pipes and valves to the desired destination. Hydraulic forces can be very high, which is why the tree shear must also be robust in all respects, including the hydraulic cylinders.
Tree shear cutting blade
The cutting blade of the tree shear is the part of the tree shear that ultimately cuts the tree. Since the energy tree is cut by pressing the tree against the blade, the blade must also be able to withstand extreme stress. For this reason, the cutting blade of the JAK Tree Shear is designed and shaped to make cutting as effortless as possible and to keep the blade in working order for as long as possible. It is also possible to remove the cutting blade for maintenance.
In some models of tree shear, the cutting blade can also be switched to a separate guillotine or saw unit, which allows trees larger than the default cutting diameter of the tree shear to be felled. Such functions also make the tree shear a more versatile tool, especially in terms of loading characteristics.
Tree shear clamps
The tree shear clamps connect the shear to the machine. The tree shear clamp is fitted to the rear of the gripper, with the upper part of the clamp providing the desired grip on the counterpart of the machine. This means that the tree shear can be fitted to the power grab at the factory according to the customer’s requirements.
Common tree shear fasteners include MS01, MS03, MS08, MS10, S30, S40, S45, S60, S70, CW30, pin fastener, etc. It is also possible to change the loose fitting of the tree shear to a different model afterwards. More special fixtures and solutions can also be implemented on the tree shear according to the type of machine and the user’s requirements.
JAK Tree shear – accessories
Tree shear accessories improve work productivity, diversify the range of applications and make work more comfortable. The demand for different accessories is particularly high because the applications and requirements for tree shears vary greatly from one country to another and from one situation to another. For this reason, the tree shear can be equipped with additional functions that are not necessary for the operation of another user.
Commonly used accessories for tree shears include a collector, 360° rotator system, extension boom, heel, eBoost hydraulic system and various steering systems. Tree shear accessories can be supplied pre-installed with a new grab purchase, but can also be easily retrofitted to an existing grab model. You can find more information about the accessories for JAK Tree Shears on the individual presentation page of each device.
